Motorcycle insurance groups range from 1 to 17 but the majority of Maxi Scooters are in the mid-range. Unfortunately, due to a high number of thefts in recent years, scooter insurance groups are climbing but generally speaking, scooters are cheaper to insure than motorcycles.
Essentially most scooters over 200cc classify as a maxi scooter. The highest capacity scooter is Aprilia’s SRV850 but they’re not that common. Yamaha’s T-Max 500 is the most common big-engined scooter. Maxi scooter insurance groups tend to range from Group 7 to Group 12.
Motorcycle insurers are tight-lipped when it comes to divulging the insurance groups they class each scooter in – as this is their special sauce; the way they get one-up on their competition, so it’s unlikely that any insurer or broker will publish their info.
It is worth noting that a scooter’s insurance group will vary depending on the insurer. Each insurer has its own grades, although they will be fairly close to each other. Here at BikerRated we’ve spoken to three industry sources who have checked over our list to ensure it is as accurate as possible.
This list features all scooters on sale in 2019. If you’re looking for a scooter that’s not listed, drop us a message using the contact form and we’ll research it and add it to the list.

Which insurance Group Is Cheapest?
Motorbikes and scooters that are in a lower insurance group are cheaper to insure than those in a higher insurance group. Group 1 is the cheapest, but the number of insurance groups varies depending on the provider. Some use 1 to 17 while others use 1 to 43. However, as a customer, you’ll never truly know which group your bike is in. Generally speaking the lower the engine size, the less power a bike makes and the cheaper it will be to insure.
