What is PCP and HP?
Both HP and PCP are forms of motorcycle finance.
HP stands for Hire Purchase. Essentially it works in a very similar way to a bank loan. You borrow a lump sum and pay it off in monthly installments. Once you have paid off all the installment (usually over a period of 24 to 60 months) the bike is yours.
HP can make it easier for some people to buy a new motorcycle as you don’t pay for it all in advance. There are generally no mileage restrictions because, at the end of the agreement, the bike’s yours and so the dealer doesn’t really mind how many miles it has on it.
Some motorcycle manufacturers and dealers will run HP deals with zero deposit required and a low-interest rate – sometimes lower than an equivalent bank loan but it pays to shop around.

PCP stands for Personal Contract Purchase. It’s slightly more complicated than HP but it’s popular because PCP monthly payments are always lower than HP.
It works like this. Let’s say you put 10% down as a deposit on a new bike, meaning there’s 90% left to pay. You agree on a loan duration and annual mileage. Then from this, you and the dealer agree on the future value of the bike (this is called the Guaranteed Future Value or GFV) but it’s essentially how much the bike is going to depreciate over the duration of your PCP agreement.
Let’s say your PCP contract is for 36 months and at the end of that 36 months, you’ve agreed the bike will be worth 50% of the new price.
Your monthly repayments are then based on the remaining 40% of the bike’s new price plus a small amount of interest on the bike’s new price. You pay your monthly PCP installments for 36 months and at the end of the agreement, you have 3 options:
- You can pay the agreed GFV and the bike’s yours.
- Or you can part-exchange the bike with the dealer, using the collateral you’ve built up in the bike as the trade-in price against a new motorcycle.
- Or you can simply hand the bike back to the dealer or finance company and walk away.
In essence, you’re paying off the depreciation of the bike over the loan period, plus interest on the entire bike’s new value throughout the period of your agreement. The PCP payments are always lower than HP payments.
There are often lots of 0% finance PCP deals when a manufacturer launches a new motorcycle and sometimes with no deposit.
PCP means you can have a new motorbike for a lower monthly payment when compared to HP. You can then get a new motorbike at the end of the PCP contract, usually every 2 to 3 years and start the process again.
If you don’t want to worry about servicing costs, re-selling your old bike or you just fancy a new bike every few years because you can, then PCP is a good option.
